Orissa Environmental Society(OES)
Orissa Environmental Society was founded in 1982 to promote mass awareness on the rapid pace of ecological degradation and the urgent need for protection and conservation of the environment and natural resources for eco-restoration.
The Society came into existence on the 21st February 1982 during the national Seminar on “Environmental Study and Forest Education” held at Phulbani under the auspices of the National Service Scheme of the Government College, Phulbani and the Rotary Club of Phulbani, The Society was registered under the Societies Registration Act. 1860 (Registration No.100/19 of 1982-83 dated 25.10.1982).
In 1986, at the initiative of the Founder President Shri Prasanna Kumar Dash and Founder Secretary Prof. (Dr) Sundara Narayana Patro, the Society’s office began operations in Bhubaneswar. In recognition of its unwavering commitment to promoting environmental awareness, the Government of Odisha graciously allotted a plot of land free of premium. Today, the Society proudly operates from its own permanent building located at Plot No. ND-4, VIP Area, IRC Village, Bhubaneswar.
The Society conducts survey and research; publishes books and documents; holds mass mobilization campaigns, workshops, seminars, conferences, training courses, popular lectures, exhibitions, competitions; supports organizations with similar objectives; makes liaison with the State, National and International organizations; and such other activities in matters related to protection and conservation of environment and natural resources.
The Society primarily generates its funds through member subscriptions, donations, and interest accrued from its corpus fund. In addition, it receives financial support from the State and Union Governments for specific projects. At times, industrial and corporate organizations, philanthropic institutions, individual members, and well-wishers have also extended valuable contributions to support the Society’s causes.
